Early coke ovens released clouds of toxic gases directly into the air, but even before environmental regulations put a stop to that practice, coke oven operators realized that many of these gases had an economic value.
Gases from the coke ovens are now recovered and piped to the chemical plant, where they are separated and used to make thousands of useful and valuable chemical compounds.
